What Does The Reading Booster Program Look Like?

Learning phonemic awareness through puppets & stuffed animals!

Learning phonics skills through building & design challenges!

Learning reading fluency through customized board games!

Learning vocabulary through funny story creations and comic books!

Learning reading comprehension through detective games!

  • 4-12 year old students identified by their teachers as a struggling reader. (This program is especially for students who do not like reading!) No formal IEP is required.

  • Yes! Unlike other reading programs or tutoring services, this program is designed to be accessible for students with attention needs who often struggle to engage with learning activities. In our classes, we use our body movement AND toys to help us learn to read!

  • For a child who needs a little extra support in learning to become an independent reader, it is understandable that they might have a strong reaction to being asked to read material that is above their reading level.

    In this program your child will be scaffolded/supported in their skill development (using evidence-based reading instruction). This means we follow a sequential model in which your child will only be given reading material that they have developed the skills to independently read. This leads to high levels of success, skill development and feelings of confidence!

    The reading activities and games in this program will also be personalized to your child’s interests, leading to higher levels of engagement and motivation than other tutoring services. (Many of my students have even asked to have a class on their birthday!)

  • The Reading Booster Program can be combined with the Math is for Me Program and/or the I Can Write Program to best support your child’s learning needs. We can discuss the best plan to support your child’s learning during the intake meeting.

  • Yes! Since 2020, the Reading Booster Program has been delivered virtually and has supported students from all across Canada! The virtual format has allowed families to conveniently connect from home, while innovative virtual design has accelerated both student progress and engagement.

    In 3 years, the virtual Reading Booster Program has brought over 100 students from struggling readers to confidently reading at or above grade level!

    The in-person Reading Booster Program is available for students located in Vancouver, British Columbia.

  • My approach combines the evidence-based instructional practices of the Science of Reading with the evidence-based instructional practices of Play-Based Learning.

    This means my approach is guided by evidence from scientific research about what works in helping students learn to read. It’s teaching students to read using the best instructional methods available, not the best marketed “reading programs” available. All classes and material provided are created using evidence-based instructional strategies that target key skills for long-term reading success.
